Is acne getting you down? We can help!

There is nothing worse than getting breakouts, and pimples always seem to rear their red, ugly heads during the most important acneoccasions: school pictures, the prom, your wedding or a big job interview. Covering it up can only go so far but finding the right acne treatment can be tough. That’s when it’s time to turn to our San Antonio, TX dermatologists, Dr. Rebecca Kelso and Dr. Emily Fridlington, who can offer a wide variety of ways to combat your acne symptoms once and for all.

At-Home Skincare

An important component to having healthy skin is how you care for your skin. Many people think that people get acne because they don’t clean their skin enough. This simply isn’t true. In fact, washing too aggressively or too much can irritate or even make your breakouts worse.

Choose a mild cleanser or opt for an acne cleanser (just be aware these products can dry out the skin) and wash your face twice a day with warm water. You will also want to exfoliate about once or twice a week to remove the dead skin from the surface and to prevent clogged pores.

Also look at the other skincare products you use: your moisturizers, sunscreens and makeup. They should all say “non-comedogenic”, which means that they won’t clog pores. They should state that they are oil-free. If you notice acne around the scalp and hairline you may want to take a look at what hair products you are using and whether they contain oils.

Sometimes no matter what products you use it still isn’t enough to target your acne. In this case our San Antonio skin doctors can help determine which medication will be able to get rid of your acne problems. Common prescription medications include:

  • Retin-A
  • Benzyl peroxide
  • Antibiotics
  • Hormone therapy (e.g. birth control pills)
  • Accutane

We can also perform extractions right here in our office to remove blackheads and whiteheads. You should never try to pop pimples yourself, as you could cause scarring. If you really want to it removed leave it to the professionals to do it.

You can take on the fight against acne and win when you have Alamo Heights Dermatology in San Antonio, TX on your side. We will work with you and your needs to help find the perfect treatment options for you. Schedule an appointment today!
