A Look at PRP for Hair Loss

Let’s face it, dealing with hair loss is no walk in the park. According to the Cleveland Clinic, around 50 million American men and 30 million women have male- or female-pattern baldness. This can begin early in life, but it is much more common after the age of 50. Living with this type of hair loss can be frustrating and embarrassing to deal with. However, a new treatment option may be the key to addressing this issue.

You might have heard of different facial treatments using PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, that use your own blood to help achieve results. There’s a similar treatment that works this way to treat hair loss.

PRP for hair loss is performed by beginning with a standard blood draw from the patient's arm. The blood is then placed in a machine where the plasma is separated from the blood.  This platelet rich plasma is injected directly into a patient’s scalp.  These cells, full of growth factors can help revive miniaturized or deficient hair follicles.

The process is typically performed once monthly for 3 months and then every 4-6 months for maintenance. The injection schedule will ultimately depend on your pattern and amount of hair loss, age, genetics, and hormones. Studies show about 20-30% improvement in hair growth on average.
